“I believe that words are strong, that they can overwhelm what we fear when fear seems more awful than life is good.” – Andrew Solomon
I share Andrew Solomon’s belief in the power of words. Narratives in all forms are what sustain me; they are the soul fuel that exists even in the moments of fear inherent to life to which Solomon refers. I believe in holy silence and in holding space, in the buoyancy of love and the healing in forgiveness given without grief, I believe in listening with uncrossed arms and no agenda, and in the tidal wave of calm that comes with standing next to an ocean during the winter months. I believe in celebrating the victories and in sharing the journey to which “Soul of a Citizen” refers. I believe in walking with others in many capacities, and in the occasional acknowledgement that crawling is acceptable when walking becomes too difficult. I believe in the incredible resilience of the human spirit and in the profound community that comes from sharing that resilience. I believe innovation draws from that resilience to create pockets of change that exemplify human ingenuity, compassion, and genuine investment in tangible human gain. I believe learning connects us to narratives far beyond our own and that listening is a powerful privilege and a necessary component of being truly heard. I believe in the power of “Social Capital” as discussed by OECD Insights. I believe in the networks we create in casual and in profound interactions. I believe in asking the questions and acting upon the motivation that Asset Based Community Development embodies. I believe in the same model that illustrates the inherent contributions of which individuals and communities are capable. I believe that the “Inside-Out” citizen centered approach to innovation wherein “people are better than programs” just as the Asset Based Community Development model argues. I believe in being oriented around people and making space for powerful stories.
